Xiren asked Ping’er what all the bustle was about. Ping’er said with a smile, “Things no one in the world would think of. They’re laughable when told, but I’ll tell you in a few days. Just now there’s no head or tail to it, and I’ve no time.” Before she finished, Li Wan’s maid arrived and said, “So Sister Ping is here! Our mistress is waiting for you. Why haven’t you gone?” Ping’er quickly turned and went out, saying with a smile, “Coming, coming.” Xiren and the others laughed. “Now that her mistress is ill, she’s become a hot cake—everyone is snatching at her and can’t get her.” Ping’er left, and no more need be said.

Baoyu then called Chunyan: “Go with your mother to Miss Bao’s rooms and say a few good words to Ying’er. You mustn’t offend her for nothing.” Chunyan assented and went out with her mother. Baoyu called through the window, “Don’t say it in front of Miss Bao. Mind it only gets Ying’er a scolding instead.”

Mother and daughter assented and went out. As they walked, they chatted. Chunyan said to her mother, “I’ve often advised you, but you never believe me. Why must you make trouble and lose face before you stop?” Her mother said with a smile, “Little wretch, be off with you. As the saying goes, ‘You don’t gain wisdom until you’ve been through something.’ I know now. And here you are again, nagging at me.” Chunyan smiled. “Mother, if you keep to your place and stay here long, there will be many advantages. Let me tell you something: Baoyu often says that in the future, everyone in these rooms—whether house-born or brought from outside, all of us—he will report to Lady Wang and have them all freed, to go back to their own parents as they please. Just think, is that good or not?” Her mother, hearing this, was delighted and quickly asked, “Is that true?” Chunyan said, “Who would tell such a lie?” The old woman heard this and went on calling on Buddha.

Presently they arrived at the Alpinia Garden. It happened that Baochai, Daiyu, Aunt Xue, and the others were eating. Ying’er went to brew tea. Chunyan and her mother went straight to Ying’er and said with apologetic smiles, “Just now our words were rude. Please don’t be angry or take offense, miss. We’ve come especially to apologize.” Ying’er quickly smiled and offered them seats and poured tea. Mother and daughter said they had business and took their leave. Suddenly Ruiguan came out and called, “Mother and sister, wait a moment.” She came up and handed them a paper packet, saying it was rose nitrate to take to Fangguan for her face. Chunyan smiled. “You are too stingy. Are you afraid there’s none there for her? You must trouble yourself to send her a packet.” Ruiguan said, “Hers is hers; what I send is from me. Good sister, do take it back.” Chunyan had to accept it. Mother and daughter returned. It happened that Jia Huan and Jia Cong had come to inquire after Baoyu and had just gone in. Chunyan said to her mother, “I’ll go in alone. You needn’t come.” Her mother, from then on, obeyed her in everything and did not dare be stubborn.

Chunyan went in. Baoyu knew she had returned and nodded first. Chunyan understood and said no more. She stood a moment, then turned and went out, making a sign to Fangguan. Fangguan came out, and Chunyan quietly told her about Ruiguan and gave her the nitrate. Baoyu had nothing to talk about with Jia Cong and Jia Huan, so he asked Fangguan with a smile what was in her hand. Fangguan quickly handed it to Baoyu to look at and said it was rose nitrate for spring ringworm. Baoyu smiled. “She thought of it.” Jia Huan heard this, craned his neck to look, smelled a fresh fragrance, bent down, took a piece of paper from his boot, held it out, and said with a smile, “Good brother, give me half.” Baoyu had to give him some. Fangguan, because it was a gift from Ruiguan, was unwilling to give it to anyone else. She quickly stopped him and said with a smile, “Don’t touch this. I’ll get you some other.” Baoyu understood, quickly wrapped it up with a smile, and said, “Go fetch it quickly.”

Fangguan took this and put it away, then went to her dressing case to find the kind she usually used. Opening the box, she saw it was empty. She wondered: there had been some left in the morning—how was it gone? She asked the others, but all said they did not know. Sheyue said, “Why bother about that now? Someone in these rooms must have run short. Just give them anything. How would they know the difference? Hurry and send them off so we can eat.” Fangguan, hearing this, wrapped up some jasmine powder and brought it. Jia Huan saw it and reached out for it. Fangguan tossed it onto the kang. Jia Huan had to pick it up from the kang, tucked it into his bosom, and took his leave.

Now Jia Zheng was not at home, and Lady Wang and the others were also away, so Jia Huan had for days pretended illness and played truant. Now that he had the nitrate, he went happily to find Caiyun. Caiyun was chatting with Zhao Yiniang. Jia Huan said to Caiyun with a grin, “I’ve got a fine packet too. I’ll give it to you to rub on your face. You often say rose nitrate for ringworm is better than the silver nitrate outside. Look and see if this is it.” Caiyun opened it, gave a laugh, and said, “Who did you get this from?” Jia Huan told her what had happened. Caiyun smiled. “They’re making a country bumpkin of you. This isn’t nitrate. It’s jasmine powder.” Jia Huan looked. It was indeed a little redder than the other and smelled fragrant. He said with a smile, “This is good too. Nitrate or powder, it’s all the same. Keep it to rub on. It must be better than what’s bought outside.” Caiyun had to accept it. Zhao Yiniang said, “They gave you something good! Who told you to go asking? No wonder they made a fool of you. If I were you, I’d take it and throw it in her face. While everyone is out paying respects or lying sick in bed, make a scene. Then no one will have peace. It will be revenge. In two months, will they still pick on this to question you? Even if they do, you’ll have something to say. Baoyu is your elder brother, so you don’t dare offend him. But can’t you go and ask even the cats and dogs in his rooms?” Jia Huan heard this and lowered his head. Caiyun quickly said, “Why stir up trouble? Whatever happens, just be patient.” Zhao Yiniang said, “Don’t you interfere. It has nothing to do with you. Since we have right on our side, it would be good to give those shameless bitches a scolding.” She pointed at Jia Huan and said, “Pah! You low, spineless thing, no wonder you swallow the insults of these little brats! If I say one word to you, or accidentally hand you the wrong thing, you turn your head, bulge your veins, glare, and stamp at your mother. But when you’re made a fool of by those little bitches, you just take it. And you still expect the people in this house to fear you tomorrow? If you haven’t the guts, I’m ashamed for you.” Jia Huan, both ashamed and frantic, did not dare go, but only flung his hand and said, “You talk so well—why don’t you dare go yourself? You set me on to make a scene. If I go to school and get beaten, will you feel the pain? Every time you egg me on to make trouble, and when trouble comes and I get beaten and scolded, you just lower your head. Now you egg me on to quarrel with those little slave girls. If you’re not afraid of Third Sister, then go yourself. If you dare, I’ll submit to you.” This one sentence stabbed his mother to the heart. She cried, “I squeezed him out of my guts—am I afraid? There will be even more to say in this house.” She took the packet and flew like the wind into the garden. Caiyun tried in vain to stop her and had to hide in another room. Jia Huan slipped out the ceremonial gate to play.

Zhao Yiniang went straight into the garden, her head on fire. She ran head-on into Ouguan’s foster mother, Old Mrs. Xia, coming over. Seeing Zhao Yiniang coming in a fury, she asked, “Where are you going, Yiniang?” Zhao Yiniang said, “Just look! In this house, even the little painted opera girls who come in every few days now weigh people and serve side dishes according to rank. If it were anyone else, I wouldn’t be angry. But to be made a fool of by these little whores—what is that?” Old Mrs. Xia, hearing this, was delighted and quickly asked why. Zhao Yiniang told her everything about Fangguan using powder instead of nitrate to slight Jia Huan. Old Mrs. Xia said, “My good Yiniang, is this the first you know of it? This is nothing. Only yesterday in this very place they privately burned paper money, and Baoyu even shielded them. Before anyone had brought anything in, they said it was improper and unclean, a taboo. But burning paper is not a taboo? Think, Yiniang. In this house, apart from Lady Wang, who is greater than you? You yourself cannot stand up, but if you could, who would not fear you? Now I say, while these little painted girls are not real goods, offending them is a small matter. Take these two matters, use them as a raft, and I will be your witness. Shake your authority a little, and later you can contend for other rights. Even the mistresses and young ladies will not speak for those little painted girls against you.” Zhao Yiniang, hearing this, felt even more justified and said, “I don’t know about the paper burning. Tell me in detail.” Old Mrs. Xia told her everything, and added, “Just go and speak. If trouble starts, we will help you.” Zhao Yiniang, hearing this, grew more confident and, emboldened, went straight to Happy Red Court.

It happened that Baoyu, hearing Daiyu was there, had gone to her. Fangguan was eating with Xiren and the others. Seeing Zhao Yiniang come, they all rose and offered her a seat with smiles: “Yiniang, have some food. What is so urgent?” Zhao Yiniang did not answer. She came up and threw the powder in Fangguan’s face, pointing at her and scolding, “Little whore! You were bought with my silver to learn opera, no more than a prostitute or painted girl! Even the third-class slaves in my house are nobler than you, yet you weigh people and serve dishes according to rank. Baoyu wanted to give something, and you blocked him. Did you think it was yours? You used this to fool him, as if he wouldn’t know! Whether good or bad, they are brothers, the same masters. How dare you look down on him!” Fangguan could not bear such words. Weeping and speaking, she said, “There was no nitrate, so I gave him this. If I said there was none, I feared he wouldn’t believe me. Isn’t this good? I studied opera, but I never went out to sing. I’m a girl. What do I know of prostitutes and painted faces? Yiniang needn’t come scolding me. I wasn’t bought by Yiniang’s family. ‘Maid Mei bows to her sworn sister—we’re all slaves together!’” Xiren quickly pulled her back. “Don’t talk nonsense!” Zhao Yiniang was so angry she came up and slapped her twice. Xiren and the others hurried to pull them apart, saying, “Yiniang, don’t lower yourself to a child. We’ll speak to her.” Fangguan, having taken two slaps, would not submit. She rolled on the ground, kicking and crying, making a scene. She said, “Can you afford to beat me? Look at yourself before you raise your hand! I’ll let you beat me—see if I live!” She rushed at Zhao Yiniang’s bosom, begging to be beaten. Everyone tried to urge and pull her away. Qingwen quietly pulled Xiren and said, “Leave them alone. Let them make a scene and see how it ends! Now everyone is playing king. You come and beat, I come and beat. If this goes on, what will become of us?”

Outside, the people who had come with Zhao Yiniang heard this and were secretly pleased. They all called on Buddha and said, “There is a day for this too!” Some old women who bore grudges, seeing Fangguan beaten, were also pleased.

Meanwhile Ouguan, Ruiguan, and the others were playing together. Xiangyun’s big painted-face Kuiguan and Baoqin’s Douguan heard the news and hurried to find the two, saying, “Fangguan is being bullied. We have no face either. We must all make a great scene and fight for our pride.” The four, after all, had childish hearts. For the sake of their friendship and righteous anger, they paid no attention to anything else and ran together into Happy Red Court. Douguan went first and butted Zhao Yiniang, almost knocking her down. The other three crowded up, wailing loudly, tearing and butting, surrounding Zhao Yiniang. Qingwen and the others laughed and pretended to pull them apart. Xiren was frantic, pulling one up and another running off, saying only, “You’ll be the death of me! If you have grievances, speak. How can you do such unreasonable things?” Zhao Yiniang, at a loss, could only curse wildly. Ruiguan and Ouguan held her left and right hands, one on each side. Kuiguan and Douguan butted her from front and back. The four said only, “You may as well beat the four of us to death!” Fangguan lay stiff on the ground, crying as if dead.

Just as things were at a deadlock, Qingwen had already sent Chunyan to report to Tanchun. Presently You Shi, Li Wan, and Tanchun came with Ping’er and the stewardesses and shouted the four to stop. When they asked the reason, Zhao Yiniang was so angry her eyes bulged and her veins swelled. She could not give a clear account. You Shi and Li Wan said nothing, only ordered the four to be quiet. Tanchun sighed and said, “What great matter is this? Yiniang is too ready to lose her temper! I was just wanting to ask Yiniang to discuss something. No wonder the maids said they didn’t know where you were. So you were here venting anger. Come with me quickly.” You Shi and Li Wan both smiled. “Yiniang, please come to the hall. Let us discuss it.”

Zhao Yiniang had no choice but to go out with the three, still grumbling. Tanchun said, “Those little maids are playthings. If you like them, laugh and talk with them; if not, ignore them. Even if they are bad, it is like a cat or dog scratching or biting you. If you can forgive, forgive. If not, you should call the stewardesses and tell them to scold or punish her. Why lower yourself and shout and scold, losing all propriety? Look at Aunt Zhou. Why does no one bully her, and why does she not go looking for people? I advise Yiniang to go back to your rooms and calm down. Don’t listen to the instigation of those muddle-headed people. You only make yourself laughable and do rough work for others for nothing. Even if you have twenty parts of anger, endure it a few days. When Lady Wang returns, she will settle it.” This speech left Zhao Yiniang speechless, and she had to return to her rooms.

Here Tanchun was so angry she said to You Shi and Li Wan, “At her age, everything she does is such that no one can respect her. What does this mean? Was it worth making a scene? She keeps no propriety, her ears are soft, and she has no calculation in her heart. This is again the work of those shameless slaves, making a fool of her to vent their own anger.” The more she thought, the angrier she became, and she ordered someone to investigate who had instigated it. The stewardesses had to assent. Outside they looked at one another and smiled, saying, “Where do you look for a needle in the ocean?” They had to question Zhao Yiniang’s people and those in the garden, but all said they did not know. Having no way, they reported to Tanchun, “It is hard to investigate at the moment. We will inquire slowly. Anyone with an improper tongue will be reported and punished.” Tanchun’s anger gradually subsided.

It happened that Aiguan quietly reported to Tanchun, “It is all because Old Mrs. Xia and we have never gotten along. She often spreads rumors and stirs up trouble. The other day she tried to blame Ouguan for burning paper, but luckily Baoyu said he told her to burn it, and Baoyu himself took responsibility, so she had nothing to say. Today, when I went with the young lady to deliver handkerchiefs, I saw her talking with Yiniang for a long time, whispering. She only went away when she saw me.” Tanchun heard this. Though she knew the ways of such people and guessed they were all of one faction, all terribly mischievous, she only assented and would not take it as certain.

Now Old Mrs. Xia’s granddaughter, Chan’er, was employed in Tanchun’s quarters. She often went with the maids to buy things and call people, and all the girls were friendly with her. That day after the meal, Tanchun was in the hall managing affairs. Cuimo was at home watching the rooms and told Chan’er to go out and call a page to buy cakes. Chan’er said, “I’ve just swept the whole big garden. My back and legs ache. Tell someone else.” Cuimo smiled. “Who else am I to tell? Go quickly. I’ll tell you something good. On your way to the back gate, tell your old mother to be on guard.” Then she told her what Aiguan had reported about her grandmother. Chan’er heard this, quickly took the money, and said, “That little wretch wants to make trouble too. Let me go tell her.” She rose and went out. At the back gate, she saw that the kitchen was idle at the moment; everyone was sitting on the steps chatting, including her grandmother. Chan’er told an old woman to go buy cakes. Then, scolding and talking, she told Old Mrs. Xia what had just been said. Old Mrs. Xia, hearing it, was both angry and afraid. She wanted to go find Aiguan and question her, and also to go to Tanchun and complain. Chan’er quickly stopped her. “What would you say, old lady? How did you learn this? If you bring it up, it will only make things worse. I’m telling you to be on guard. There’s no need to rush now.”

As she spoke, Fangguan came over, leaning on the courtyard gate, and said with a smile to Liu’s wife in the kitchen, “Sister-in-law Liu, Master Bao says for supper he wants a cool, sour vegetable dish, but don’t put in sesame oil and make it greasy.” Liu’s wife smiled. “I know. Why did they send you today to tell me such an important thing? If you don’t mind the dirt, come in and look around.” Fangguan had just come in when an old woman came carrying a dish of cakes. Fangguan joked, “Who bought hot cakes? Let me taste one first.” Chan’er took it with one hand and said, “This was bought by someone else. Do you still prize such things?” Liu’s wife, seeing this, quickly smiled. “Miss Fang, you like these? I have some I just bought for your sister. She hasn’t eaten them. They’re put away, clean and untouched.” She brought out a dish and handed it to Fangguan, saying, “Wait while I go in and brew you some good tea.” She went in and opened the fire to brew tea. Fangguan took the hot cake, held it up to Chan’er’s face, and said, “Do I prize your cake? Isn’t this a cake? I was only joking. Even if you kowtowed to me, I wouldn’t eat it.” She broke the cake into pieces and threw them to the birds, saying with a smile, “Sister-in-law Liu, don’t mind. I’ll buy two catties for you later.” Chan’er was so angry she stared blankly, then sneered, “Lord Thunder has eyes. Why doesn’t he strike this sinner? She’s still angry at me. What am I compared to you? You have people paying tribute and people acting as your slave, flattering you and speaking up for you.” The stewardesses said, “Girls, enough. Every day you meet and bicker.” Some clever ones, seeing them quarrel and fearing more trouble, got up and walked away. Chan’er did not dare scold her much, and grumbling, she left.

When the others had dispersed, Liu’s wife came out and said to Fangguan, “Did you speak about that matter the other day?” Fangguan said, “I spoke. Wait a day or two before bringing it up again. That cursed Zhao happened to make a scene with me again. Did your sister eat the rose dew the other day? Is she any better?” Liu’s wife said, “She ate it all. She loved it so, but I couldn’t ask you for more.” Fangguan said, “It’s nothing. I’ll ask for some more for her.”

Now Liu’s wife had a daughter, just sixteen this year. Though the daughter of a cook, she was as pretty as Ping’er, Xiren, Zijuan, and Yuanyang. Because she was the fifth child, she was called Wu’er. She had always been frail and sickly, so she had no duties. Recently Liu’s wife had seen that the maids in Baoyu’s rooms had light work and were many, and had heard that Baoyu would free them all in the future, so she wanted to send her daughter there to fill a name. She had no way in, but it happened that Liu’s wife worked in Pear Fragrance Court. She was most attentive and served Fangguan and the others better than other foster mothers. Fangguan and the others treated them very well too. So she spoke to Fangguan and begged her to speak to Baoyu. Baoyu agreed, but recently he had been ill and there were many affairs, so nothing had been said yet.

To continue: Fangguan returned to Happy Red Court and reported to Baoyu. Baoyu had heard Zhao Yiniang making a scene and was displeased. He could neither speak nor not speak, so he had to wait until the noise was over. Hearing that Tanchun had advised her to go, he returned from the Alpinia Garden and comforted Fangguan for a while, and everyone settled down. Now seeing her return, she said she wanted more rose dew for Liu Wu’er. Baoyu quickly said, “There is some. I don’t take much. Give it all to her.” He told Xiren to bring it out. Seeing there was not much in the bottle, he gave her the bottle too.

Fangguan carried the bottle to her. It happened that Liu’s wife had brought her daughter in to relieve her boredom. They had strolled about in a corner of the garden and then returned to the kitchen to rest and drink tea. Fangguan brought a small glass bottle about five inches high. Holding it to the light, they saw it was half full of a rouge-like liquid, and thought it was the Western wine Baoyu drank. Mother and daughter quickly said, “Heat some water in a jug. Sit down.” Fangguan smiled. “This is all that’s left. I’ll give you the bottle too.” Wu’er then knew it was rose dew. She quickly took it and thanked her again and again. Fangguan asked if she was better. Wu’er said, “I have a little more energy today, so I came in to stroll. The back area here is not interesting—just big rocks, big trees, and the back walls of houses. I haven’t seen the real fine scenery.” Fangguan said, “Why don’t you go farther in?” Liu’s wife said, “I didn’t let her. The young ladies don’t know her. If someone who dislikes her sees her, there will be more talk. Tomorrow, when you help her get a room, will there be no one to take her around? There may even be days when she tires of strolling.” Fangguan smiled. “What are you afraid of? I’m here.” Liu’s wife quickly said, “Oh my, my girl, our skin is thin, not like yours.” She poured tea. Fangguan would not drink it, only rinsed her mouth and left. Liu’s wife said, “My hands are full. Fifth girl, see her out.”

Wu’er saw her out. When she saw no one around, she pulled Fangguan and asked, “Did you speak about my matter or not?” Fangguan smiled. “Would I lie to you? I heard there are still two vacancies in the rooms that haven’t been filled. One is Hongyu’s; Second Mistress Lian wanted her but hasn’t sent anyone. One is Zhui’er’s, also not filled. Taking you now wouldn’t be too much. But Ping’er often tells Xiren that in any matter involving people or money, if it can wait, it’s better to wait a day. Now Third Miss is just looking for people to make an example of. She has already rejected two or three matters in her own rooms, and is looking for something in our rooms but hasn’t found it. Why run into the net? If she says something and rejects it, then it will be too late and hard to turn back. Better wait until things cool down. When Lady Jia and Lady Wang are at leisure, speak to the old ones first about even the greatest matter, and it will be done.” Wu’er said, “That may be, but I am impatient and can’t wait. If I am chosen now, first, it will win face for my mother and not have been in vain that she raised me; second, there will be more monthly money and the family will be better off; third, my heart will open, and I may get better. Even for a doctor and medicine, it will save the family money.” Fangguan said, “I know all that. Set your mind at ease.” The two parted. Fangguan went back, and no more need be said.

Let us speak only of Wu’er returning and thanking Fangguan deeply to her mother. Her mother said, “I never expected to get such things. Though it is a precious thing, eating too much can cause heat. We might as well pour some out and give it to someone—it would be a great favor.” Wu’er asked, “To whom?” Her mother said, “To your uncle’s son. Yesterday he had a fever and wanted to eat such things. I’ll pour half a cup for him.” Wu’er heard this and said nothing for a long while. Her mother poured half a cup and went, putting the rest, bottle and all, in the kitchen cupboard. Wu’er said with a cold smile, “I say we might as well not give it to him. If someone asks questions, it will be another trouble.” Her mother said, “What is there to be afraid of? We work hard and earn a little something inside—it is only right. It’s not as if it were stolen.” She went off. She went to her brother’s house outside. Her nephew was lying down. When he saw it, her brother, sister-in-law, and nephew were all delighted. They drew cold water from the well, mixed a bowl, and drank it. His heart felt refreshed and his head clear. The remaining half cup was covered with paper and left on the table.

It happened that several pages in the household who were friendly with her nephew came to ask after his illness. Among them was a young man named Qian Huai, a nephew of Zhao Yiniang. His parents managed accounts in the storehouse, and he himself had been assigned to attend Jia Huan at school. Because he had some money and influence, he had not yet married. He had long had his eye on Liu Wu’er for her beauty and had told his parents he wanted to marry her. He had sent go-betweens repeatedly to ask. Liu’s parents were willing, but Wu’er refused firmly. Though she did not say so openly, her behavior showed it, and her parents did not dare agree. Recently she wanted even more to go into the garden, and she put the matter aside, waiting three or five years until she was freed and could choose a husband outside. The Qian family, seeing her like this, let it be. But Qian Huai, unable to get Wu’er, was both angry and ashamed. He vowed to get her as his wife to satisfy his wish. Today he came with others to visit Liu’s nephew, not expecting Liu’s wife to be there.

Liu’s wife suddenly saw a group of people come in, including Qian Huai. She made an excuse of being busy and rose to leave. Her brother and sister-in-law quickly said, “Sister, why not stay for tea? It was kind of you to remember us.” Liu’s wife smiled. “I fear they will call for food inside. When I have leisure, I’ll come out again to see my nephew.” Her sister-in-law took a paper packet from a drawer, handed it to Liu’s wife as she saw her out, and at the corner of the wall gave it to her, saying with a smile, “This is from your brother. Yesterday he was on duty at the gate. It happened this five-day shift was very slow—no extra income at all. Only yesterday an official from eastern Guangdong came to pay respects and gave two small baskets of poria frost to the higher-ups. The rest was given to the gate men as a gate gift, and your brother got this share. This place has the most thousand-year pines and cypresses, so they take the essence of poria and mix it with medicine. I don’t know how they make this strange, handsome white frost. They say it is best taken with human milk, one cup every morning—most nourishing. Next best is cow’s milk. If you can’t get that, boiling water will do. We thought it would be just right for your niece. I was going to send a little maid home with it this morning, but she said the door was locked and even your niece had gone in. I meant to come see her and bring it, but then I thought the masters are not at home and everything is strict. I have no errand, so why run about? Besides, these days there is talk that inside the household is upside down. If we get mixed up in it, it would be worse. You came just in time. Take it yourself.” Liu’s wife thanked her and took leave.

Just as she reached the side gate, a little page said with a smile, “Where have you been, old lady? They have sent for you three or four times. Four of us have been looking for you, and you hadn’t come. Where did you come from? This road is not the way home. I am suspicious.” Liu’s wife scolded him with a smile, “You little monkey...” If you want to know what happened, listen to the next chapter.
