King Wu asked Tai Gong:
"When leading troops deep into enemy territory, we suddenly encounter the enemy. Their forces are vast and ferocious, deploying Martial Impact Chariots and fierce cavalry to encircle our flanks. Our entire army is seized with terror, soldiers fleeing uncontrollably. What should we do?"

Tai Gong replied:
"Such a force is called a 'routed army.' A skilled commander can turn this crisis into victory; an unskilled one will meet ruin."

King Wu asked:
"What strategy should we employ in this situation?"

Tai Gong answered:
"Ambush your elite crossbowmen and position heavy chariots and cavalry on both flanks. Set the ambush about three li (1.5 km) ahead and behind your main force. When the enemy pursues, unleash your chariots and cavalry to strike their flanks. This will throw them into disarray, and your fleeing troops will rally."

King Wu asked again:
"When our chariots and cavalry face the enemy’s superior numbers and strength—their formation disciplined, their soldiers elite—how can we withstand their assault?"

Tai Gong answered:
"Deploy your elite crossbowmen in ambush on both sides, fortify your chariots and cavalry into a defensive formation. As the enemy passes your ambush, unleash volleys of crossbow fire on their flanks. Then charge with chariots, cavalry, and shock troops—attack their front and rear simultaneously. Though outnumbered, the enemy will collapse."

King Wu exclaimed:
"Brilliant!"
