In ancient times, those who were good at living by the Tao were subtle, mysterious, deep, and far-reaching—too deep to be easily understood. And because they were hard to understand, I can only give a rough picture of them: Cautious and hesitant, like someone crossing a river in winter. Alert and watchful, like someone afraid of neighbors on every side. Dignified and reserved, like a guest. Relaxed and flowing, like ice beginning to melt. Simple and honest, like uncarved wood. Open and spacious, like an empty valley. Mixed and tolerant, like muddy water. Who can quiet the muddy water and let it slowly become clear? Who can stay still and then move with the flow, slowly coming back to life? Those who hold to this Tao do not seek to be full. And because they are not full, they can remain in the old and yet always be renewed and completed.
