Chapter 55
A person of deep virtue is like a newborn baby. Poisonous insects do not sting him. Wild beasts do not seize him. Birds of prey do not strike him. His bones and muscles are soft and weak, yet his grip is tight. He does not yet know the union of male and female, yet his little organ stands erect. This is vital essence at its fullest. He cries all day and never gets hoarse. This is natural energy in perfect harmony. To know this harmony is called constancy. To know constancy is called clarity. To try to add to life is a bad omen. To let the mind drive the vital energy is called forcing strength. When things become strong, they grow old. This is called going against the Tao. Whatever goes against the Tao soon comes to an end.
