Chapter 51
The Tao gives birth to all things; virtue nourishes them. Each thing takes shape in its own form, and circumstances bring it to completion. That is why there is nothing that does not honor the Tao and value virtue. The Tao is honored and virtue is valued not because anyone commands it, but because it is naturally so. So the Tao gives them birth, and virtue nourishes them. It grows them, raises them, matures them, completes them, supports them, and protects them. It gives them life but does not possess them. It acts but does not claim credit. It nourishes them but does not rule over them. This is called deep and mysterious virtue.
