Chapter 2
Everyone knows beauty as beauty—and so ugliness comes into being. Everyone knows goodness as goodness—and so its opposite comes into being. Thus being and non-being give rise to each other; difficult and easy complete each other; long and short reveal each other; high and low depend on each other; sound and voice harmonize with each other; front and back follow each other.
Therefore the sage acts without forcing anything and teaches without words. He lets all things arise and does not turn away from them. He gives them life but does not possess them. He acts but does not depend on his own ability. He succeeds but does not claim the credit. And because he does not claim the credit, his success never leaves him.
