Chapter 25
There is something whole and undivided that existed before Heaven and Earth.
Silent and empty, it stands alone and never changes. It moves in cycles and never stops. It can be regarded as the source of Heaven and Earth.
I do not know its name. I call it Tao, and if forced to name it, I call it Great.
Great means it flows on. Flowing on means it reaches far. Reaching far means it returns to the source.
So Tao is great, Heaven is great, Earth is great, and the human being is great.
In the universe there are four greats, and the human being is one of them.
Humans follow Earth.
Earth follows Heaven.
Heaven follows Tao.
And Tao follows its own natural way.
