My words are very easy to understand and very easy to put into practice. Yet no one in the world can understand them or put them into practice. Words have a root. Actions have a guiding principle. It is because people do not understand this that they do not understand me. Those who understand me are few, and those who follow me are even rarer. So the sage wears rough cloth on the outside, but carries jade within.
